Description

A row of five mid-19th century terraced houses stands on Gold Street in Saffron Walden. The houses are built of yellow brick with a peg-tiled roof. They have a rectangular plan, two storeys and cellars, and a partial attic. The west front elevation features a central brick string course. Each house has a single window range, and the doorways are irregularly placed, with entrances at number 14 and 22 on the outer edges, at numbers 18 and 20 paired together, and number 16 presented similarly to number 14. Three brick stacks are also irregularly positioned, one between numbers 20 and 22, and one on each side of number 16; some square chimneypots remain. The windows are complete and slightly segmental headed, with good voussoirs, sash glazing with 3x4 panes. Cellar windows are also segmental headed casements with three-barred grilles. The doorways are round headed with blind stucco moulded fanlights containing glazing bars. Number 14 has been appropriately painted. All original doors, except at number 16, consist of four bead-moulded flush panels. Number 22 has an inserted dormer window with a simple, flat roof and two plain lights. A considerable amount of crown glass remains in the window sashes throughout the row.
