Description

A row of four early 19th-century houses stands on a sloping site at 66-72 Castle Street, Saffron Walden. The houses are built of red brick with a slate roof, and feature two brick stacks for each pair of houses. The north front has a symmetrical arrangement of four window bays and four door bays. The window voussoirs and blind arched doorheads are constructed of rubbed brick. The original doors to numbers 66, 68 and 72 have four bead-moulded flush panels, while the door to number 70 is a 20th-century fielded panel design. The windows in numbers 66 and 68 are original sashes with a 5x4 pane configuration, whereas numbers 70 and 72 contain 20th-century casements with 4x4 panes and simulated glazing bars. The south rear elevation is faced with yellow brick similar to the front, and includes windows and doors with segmental heads. The original four-panel door is found at number 70, with the others being 20th-century replacements. The windows at numbers 66 and 68 are original sashes with 4x4 panes, with the remaining windows being 20th-century sashes and casements.
