Description
The Church of St Peter is a building with origins dating back to the 13th century, but it underwent significant restoration in the 19th century. The chancel is mostly modern, and the nave features modern chapels on both the north and south sides. The standout element of the church is its 16th-century red brick tower, which has three stages and an embattled parapet. This tower is noted for being the last church tower in Essex that was used as a dovecote, with the pigeons being removed in the early 20th century. Inside, there is a heavy iron-bound chest from the 16th to 17th century. The church is primarily valued for its 16th-century west tower.
