Description
Warish Hall is a late 13th-century aisled hall house that has been altered in the 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with a red plain tile roof. A wing projects at the west end, featuring a hipped roof. The two-storey front has five bays, each containing one window, with 19th-century double-hung vertical sliding sash windows with glazing bars. There is a ground-floor bay window with a red plain tile hipped roof, and two small first-floor oriel windows. A single 15th-century vertical mullion window is also present. Two hipped gables are visible at the rear. The roof at the east end is lower than the main roof and has a parallel range behind it. Chimney stacks are constructed of 16th-century red brick and 20th-century red brick. The main entrance is a 18th-century six-panelled door set within a small, modern, plain tiled, pedimented porch. Plaster eaves coving is present.
Inside, much of the original timber framing remains, extending two and a half bays and featuring secondary rafters, tie beams, and a generally sooted roof with notched lapped collars. One original doorway survives. The 17th-century east range contains original windows, one of which retains its original shutter. Good 18th-century detailing includes the doors and staircase.
The house is moated, crossed by a 17th-century red brick bridge with 18th-century red brick walls and a blue brick half-round capping. The site was previously occupied by a Priory of St Valery in Picardy, and the current building is part of the former Priory’s remains.
