Description

Brook House Farmhouse is a house that dates from the 16th century or earlier and was extended in the late 19th century. It features a timber frame and brick construction, primarily covered in plaster, with a roof made of concrete tiles. The building consists of four bays aligned northeast to southwest, with an axial stack and a single-storey lean-to extension at the northeast end. There is a parallel range to the southeast, dating from the 16th or 17th century, which has an external stack on its southeast side.

To the west, there is a large square extension from the late 19th century, made of plastered brick and topped with a slate roof, featuring a central stack and a single-storey lean-to extension in the northern angle. The farmhouse is two storeys tall.

On the southwest elevation, the ground floor includes one splayed bay, one 20th-century sash window, one 20th-century casement window, and 20th-century French windows. The first floor has three 20th-century sash windows. There is a six-panel door with an overlight and a plastered architrave. The late 19th-century cusped bargeboards adorn both front gables.

Inside, the structure features jowled posts, heavy studding, chamfered beams, and plain joists of a large horizontal section that are housed into the beams. There is a wide boarded door on the northwest side with original hinges and a bolt. The interior contains two large wood-burning hearths made of 0.33 metre brickwork, positioned back to back, with one blocked and the other reduced for a modern grate. The main range retains its original gablet hip and sprockets at the northeast end, although the interior of the roof has not been inspected.
