Description
Retreat Farmhouse is a house that originated in the early 16th century, featuring a crosswing from the same period, a 19th-century extension, and 20th-century alterations. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a brick extension added in the 19th century. It has red plain tiled roofs and is one storey with attics, while the two-storey painted brick crosswing on the right has a hipped roof. There is a gabled dormer on the left range. The façade includes a three-to-one arrangement of small paned vertically sliding sash windows, with pentice boards over the two left windows, and a hipped, tiled bay window on the ground floor to the right. The main entrance features a central 20th-century part glazed door with a pentice board above. Inside, notable features include jowled storey posts, a cambered tie beam, and a partly rebuilt crown post roof in the main range. The east three-bay crosswing has a c.1600 framed joggled side purlin roof with reducing principal rafters and intermittent collars, along with a passage partition. There is also a three-centre arch head doorway between the hall and solar.
