Description

Andersons Opticians and Spindles Wash Vac Services is a house that has been converted into offices and a shop. It dates back to the 16th century and features a timber frame with ashlared render and a gabled plain tile roof that hips to a taller rear block at the southern end. The building has two storeys and a four-window range, now divided into several small units.

On the first floor, there are three windows with 16-pane sashes and one window with an 8-pane narrow sash that has a moulded surround. The ground floor of Spindles has three slightly bowed 20th-century shop-type windows with bulls-eye glass and a small-pane door. The adjoining section has a 20th-century shop front with small panes and canted recessed entrances, featuring a pair of 20th-century doors, one of which leads to the upper floor. The building has a central ridgeline stack and a stack on the rear wall.

Inside, the former timber-framed house has four floored bays, with the central two forming a hall and upper chamber. The posts are jowled, and the central spine beam rests on top of the parlour partition. The partitions of the parlour and solar have curved wall bracing of 'Colchester' type between the studs, with original door openings that are now infilled. The braces are pegged to the studs rather than nailed. Two original window openings are visible, and the roof is of queen-post type, previously featuring curved wind bracing to the purlins.

A first-floor room in Spindles contains much reused 17th-century panelling on the door and partition. There is an early 19th-century staircase at the south end with stick balusters and column newels, and its side walls are adorned with painted 17th-century panelling, while the upper level features 18th-century raised-and-fielded panelling. The rear part of the Wash Vac Services premises, which was formerly the service end, includes an early 19th-century semicircular-arched recess on pilasters with a reeded surround and a cast-iron decorative column.
