Description
Bells Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th century. It is timber framed and rough rendered, featuring a long wall jetty at the front and a single-storey extension to the left. The roof is hipped and covered with red plain tiles, including the left extension. The building has two storeys and a three-window range of 19th-century three-light casements. There is a central porch with a red tiled roof supported by timber posts, leading to a vertical boarded door with a light. The extension has one window and a boarded door.
Inside, there is an original red brick fireplace and stop-chamfered beams throughout. The drawing room, bedroom, and landing feature 18th-century panelling with moulded ceiling coving. A sleeping cupboard is located in the drawing room, and there are brick floors and good Victorian grates. Several doors retain their original hinges. Historical articles in Essex Countryside from July 1973 and January 1982 provide details about the occupants since 1572, noting that it was once a rectory.
