Description

The Roman Wall located 65 yards north-north-west of the Castle dates from the 1st century or later. It consists of two fragments of the northern boundary of the temple enclosure, with extensive remains lying beneath the Norman ramparts. These fragments were uncovered during landscaping in the park in 1892 when a path was created through the wall. The western fragment measures 2 feet by 3 feet by 2 feet, while the eastern fragment measures 10 feet by 3 feet by 3.5 feet. Both fragments are made of stone and are capped with modern concrete slabs.
