Description

The Roman Pavement, located 130 yards north of the Castle, dates from the 1st century or later and was discovered in 1902. It is part of a complex of houses. The pavement consists of four panels made of plain red tessera, each approximately 1 inch square, with each panel being a different size and set at slightly different levels. The entire area measures about 14 yards by 7 yards and is bordered by modern York stone slabs.
