Description

This barn, located at Upper Haye Farm, dates to the mid-14th century with alterations made in the 19th century. It is timber-framed and has black-weatherboarding, covered by a low-pitched corrugated iron roof. The barn’s plan is that of a four-bay, aisled structure with a mid-strey positioned off-centre on the west elevation, complemented by corresponding doors at the rear. In the 19th century, the aisles were raised and a new roof structure was added, leading to the primary interest lying within the interior. The mid-strey was originally gabled, but now has a flat roof. Inside, there are jowled arcade posts, with arcade plates featuring splayed and under-squinted scarf joints, indicating the barn was likely built starting from its south end. The interior also showcases heavy and steep arcade braces, tenoned and halved passing braces between arcade posts and tie beams. The aisles demonstrate “reversed-assembly,” where the tie beam carries the wall plates, and remnants of tension braces are visible across two levels on each side wall. The orientation of the passing braces confirms the barn has consistently featured an off-centre threshing-floor, which is an uncommon characteristic. A 19th-century roof sits above the original tie beams. This is a largely intact mid-14th century barn, modified in the 19th century.
