Description
This barn, located to the northeast of Northend Place, dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is timber framed and primarily clad in weatherboarding, with a roof that has gablets now covered in corrugated iron, although it was likely thatched at least as of 1892, according to sales particulars. The barn features a red brick plinth in Flemish bond and consists of six bays with an aisle on the northeast side.
A two-bay gabled extension has been added to the northeast elevation, and there is an outshot on the northwest side made from reused timbers, which seem to originate from a crownpost roof. The frame includes jowled posts, midrails, and straight diagonal braces that are trenched across the faces of the studs. The wall frame remains intact, except for some studwork that was removed to create a link with an adjoining barn from the mid to late 17th century, which has mostly collapsed.
Tie beam braces have been taken out and replaced with oak bolted knees. The original heavy section rafters, which are pegged at the ridge, are supported by clasped purlins with collars tenoned into the rafters. The rafters for the aisle roof are smaller, smoke-blackened timbers. Each roof slope features two pairs of arched wind braces above what appears to be the original door position. The barn is depicted on the Chapman and Andre map from 1777.
