Description
Dukes is a 17th-century timber-framed house located on Main Road in Danbury. The building has a 'T' shaped plan, with the main block extending north and south. Around 1600, a floor was added to the main block. The south front features three gables, with modern external elements; the center gable dates to the early 17th century, while the east gable is from a later period. The west end showcases exposed timber-framing set on a high brick plinth. The house is two storeys high and has a three-window range on the south front, with 20th-century casements. The roof is tiled with old tiles and includes a central rectangular chimney stack at the west end and a sloping-roofed dormer situated between the gables. Inside, the house retains exposed timber-framing, ceiling beams, and joists, with central longitudinal main beams running the full length of both the main block and the cross wing. The name 'Dukes' is recorded in a law court case from 1499, likely referring to this house.
