Description
This milestone, located 27 meters south-southwest of The Spread Eagle Public House, dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is made of limestone with a cast iron cover plate. One side of the cover plate is embossed with 'Chelmsford 4', while the other side reads 'Ingatstone 2'. The sloping surface above is embossed with 'To London 25 Margareting'.
This milestone is part of a series erected in the 18th century by the Essex Turnpike Trust to indicate distances along the 'Great Essex Road', which connected London to Harwich. The design of the cast iron cover plate was introduced by James McAdam and adopted by the Trust in 1819 to minimize the costs associated with re-cutting the inscriptions on the stones.
Milestones are significant as they provide important insights into historical road use. This particular milestone is notable for being in its original location and retaining its cast iron cover plate, making it a good example of its kind along the 'Great Essex Road'.
