Description
Crow Gate is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 16th century. It features a rendered exterior over a timber frame and has a gabled thatch roof with brick end stacks. The building has a three-bay plan with a through-passage to the right of a central open hall and a parlour to the left; the service bay to the right has been demolished. It is one storey with an attic and has a two-window range. The central 19th-century plank door and the two-light casements are set beneath flat rendered arches, with the casements located in swept dormers on the first floor. A 20th-century one-storey bay has been added to the right, constructed of rendered brick with a gabled old tile roof.
Inside, the house retains exposed oak timber framing, with curved bracing on jowled storey posts. The floor joists have soffit tenons with diminished haunches, and the wall plate features a face-halved and bladed joint. The roof has clasped purlins with windbraces, including a closed truss on the left, a collar truss with queen posts removed, and a truss on the right that is not visible. There is a chamfered beam, a diamond-mullioned four-light oak window, and a 19th-century plank door leading to the winder stairs in the former parlour to the left. The former open hall to the right has a late 17th-century inserted floor with a softwood beam, and remnants of a sphere truss from the demolished passage on the right. This building is a late example of an in-line three-bay open-hall house.
