Description
Avenue Lodge is a lodge cottage dating from the early 19th century, with an extension added around 1988. It is built of gault brick in Flemish bond and has a slate roof. The building has a C-plan layout, featuring a main range that runs northwest to southeast and an entrance wing to the northeast, with an internal stack at their junction. Each of the three ends is splayed to create a semi-hexagonal shape.
To the southwest, there is a 20th-century extension that is square with chamfered corners, connected to the original cottage by a short glazed corridor. The lodge is a single storey and features original sash windows with six-over-six lights and semicircular heads on both sides of the entrance wing and at the northwest end of the main range, while the southeast end has a 20th-century replica. All windows are set within recessed semicircular arches, which were rebuilt around 1988 at the northwest end. The entrance includes a half-glazed door with two boarded flush panels and a plain fanlight, also in a semicircular arch at the northeast end. The roof is fully hipped with lead joints and has three grouped octagonal chimneys. The extension is constructed of yellow brick in stretcher bond and also has a slate roof. Avenue Lodge was formerly the lodge for Thorndon Hall.
