Description
This small bridge over the River Wid, located in the Brentwood District, dates back to around 1600, with later alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is approximately 13 meters long and constructed of red brick. The bridge features two elegant 2-centre arches, with triangular cutwaters that rise and taper into a central triangular buttress. The carriage level is highlighted on the outer faces by an offset sloping profile made of three courses of chamfered bricks. The carriageway ends are swept out at a sharp angle, and the walls have a slight inner batter. The lower brickwork, dating from around 1600, includes the arches, voussoirs, and lower walling in English bond. The upper part has undergone several phases of rebuilding, with two sections meeting in the center on the east side, while the western side has been completely rebuilt in red brick during the 20th century. This bridge is believed to have been constructed by Lord Petre, given its proximity to Ingatestone Hall and the high quality of the brickwork. It straddles the boundary between the Districts of Brentwood and Chelmsford.
