Description

This building is a barn located 22 metres north-west of Ray Place Farmhouse. It dates back to the 16th century, was extended in the 18th century, and converted for domestic use in the 20th century. The structure is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of straw thatch and corrugated light alloy. It consists of four bays running approximately east-west, featuring an 18th-century midstrey to the north of the second bay from the west end. The barn was extended to the east by four bays in the 18th century, which includes a 20th-century internal stack against the north wall and lean-to extensions to the north and east. There is a single-storey wing to the south of the eastern bay and lean-to.

On the exterior, the south elevation now serves as the front. In the second bay from the left end, there are double garage doors set within a 17th-century gabled entrance, replacing the original large doors. The front features three 20th-century casement windows with diamond leading, along with three additional casements in tiled gabled dormers and two 20th-century halved doors. The roof is hipped at the left end, with the main roof's front pitch, the left hip, and the extensions at the right end thatched. Most of the rear pitch, the rear midstrey, and the lean-to are covered with corrugated light alloy, with thatch extending about one metre below the ridge.

Inside, the 16th-century barn includes jowled posts, heavy studding, and curved bracing. It has cambered tie-beams and a crownpost roof, which is complete in the left bay. There is one axial brace to a plain crownpost between this bay and the threshing bay, while the other axial brace has been removed. The remainder of the roof has been rebuilt. The wallplates at the front and rear of the threshing bay have been altered to accommodate higher great doors at the front and for the midstrey at the rear. The left extension features unjowled posts, lighter studding with primary straight bracing, face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates, straight tie-beams, and a clasped purlin roof.
