Description
Brewhouse located one metre south-west of Hook End Poultry Farmhouse, dating from the 18th century. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with some sections of red brick in Flemish bond, and has a roof covered with red clay pantiles. The building has a rectangular plan featuring a plain boarded door and one 20th-century fixed light on the north side. There is a slatted window on the east side. The south wall contains an original stack, with brickwork extending to a height of approximately 1.5 meters on either side, while the upper part is timber-framed and weatherboarded. This wall continues slightly around the east and west sides. The roof is hipped, with primary straight bracing and angle ties at the southeast and southwest corners.
Inside, there is one internal straight tie-beam that is dovetailed to the east and west wallplates, and four purlins forming a closed rectangle. The wide wood-burning hearth has 0.23-meter jambs and a high brick arch supported on an iron strip. An opening on the west side shows where the former brewing pan was located, and there is a round aperture for a flue pipe on the east side. This building is a rare example of a type that was likely common in its time.
