Description

A range of three attached houses built in the early 19th century, located on the west side of Bridge Street, Coggeshall. The houses are constructed primarily of gault brick in a Flemish bond, with red brick used at the sides and rear, and have slate roofs. They are two storeys high, with cellars beneath. The east-facing range has an internal brick stack at the left end, two axial stacks, and a projecting stack of red brick, partially plastered, at the right end. Numbers 2 and 6 have 20th-century two-storey rear extensions with flat roofs. Number 4 has a 20th-century two-storey rear extension with a slate roof.

Number 2 (the rightmost house) features a two-window front with original 12-light sash windows containing crown glass. It has a 6-panel door with a blocked overlight, set within a plain doorcase topped with a moulded flat canopy and a single granite step. There is a blocked doorway leading to a through-passage, featuring a grill of turned balusters above. A segmental arch provides access to the cellar. Number 4 displays a similar two-window front and a smaller sash window over the door. The door is a 6-panel design, with four glazed panels, and is housed within a matching doorcase. A semi-circular arch leads to the cellar, protected by an iron grill. Number 6 features a single-window front, with sashes matching those of the other houses, a 6-panel door with a plain overlight, a similar doorcase, one stone step, and a similar arch to the cellar. Some plaster patching is visible on the front elevation. The roof is hipped and of a shallow pitch. The buildings are included in the listing for their group value.
