Description
The barn located approximately 50 metres south-west of Paul's Hall dates back to around the year 1000. It is constructed with a timber frame and is weatherboarded, topped with a hipped corrugated asbestos roof that features a gablet on the left side. The barn has recessed double doors to the left and smaller double doors to the right. It consists of seven bays and has a side purlin queen strut roof construction. Although it has been partly rebuilt, the barn still retains one pair of freestanding posts; the western post was reused around 1200 during a Norman rebuild, while the southern post remains earthfast, as it was when originally built. The posts are double braced, and various types of framing are present, including reversed assembly at the north-west eaves and doubled tie beams at the north end. The roof has been rebuilt but still contains the original rafters. The building's specifications, including measurements, are recorded in the archives of St. Paul's Cathedral, the previous owners of the farm.
