Description
The barn at Feeringbury Farm, located 60 metres southeast of Feeringbury Manor, dates back to the 16th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof covered in corrugated bituminous sheeting. The structure consists of five bays with two aisles, aligned northwest to southeast, and features a midstrey to the northeast. There are later buildings nearby that do not have special architectural or historic interest.
The barn has jowled posts and arched braces connecting the arcade plates and tiebeams. The arcade plates over the posts have edge-halved and bridled scarfs. The jowled aisle ties are trenched for Kentish shores, which are currently missing. While there has been significant re-studding with primary straight braces in the walls, the main frame remains original. The original rafters in the main span are of horizontal section and include gauging holes. The barn features high clasped purlins, with each collar supported by a single post mounted on the tiebeam, which is a rare or unique construction in Essex. Some of the intermediate tiebeams and arcade posts were added later.
