Description

Old Wills Farmhouse is a building dating from the 14th or 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame that is plastered, with some parts of the frame exposed and some artificial framing. The roof is covered with handmade red plain tiles. The main range consists of three bays facing northeast, with a late 16th-century stack at the left end against the front wall and an internal stack at the right end. To the left is a two-bay crosswing that has a small single-storey extension at the rear. There is also a 19th-century wing made of painted brick to the left, which has an internal stack at the junction.

The jettied crosswing to the right of the main range dates from around 1920 and features an axial stack. The building is two storeys tall, with one storey having attics. On the ground floor, there are four 20th-century casements with diamond leading, while the first floor has two similar casements. A 17th-century door made of moulded planks has been re-sited and altered at the bottom, set in a reproduction four-centred doorhead with a modern carved date of 1528 and an ovolo-moulded canopy. The left crosswing jetties at the front, supported by two original wide plain brackets and one reproduction. The structure has jowled posts, heavy studding with curved tension braces that are trenched to the outside. The crosswing features plain joists of large horizontal section and is likely ceiled to the collars of a crownpost roof. The main range includes a large wood-burning hearth facing to the right, made of 0.33 metre brickwork, and has a late 16th-century inserted floor with plain joists of square section that are jointed to the axial beam with soffit tenons and diminished haunches, although the roof has been altered.
