Description

Building 70, also known as the Petrol Tanker Sheds, is a group of six tanker garages constructed in 1936, with an extension of two bays added to the south in 1938. Designed by the Air Ministry's Directorate of Works and Buildings, the structure features brickwork in Flemish bond and a concrete roof finished with asphalt.

The garages are arranged in a straight row, opening to the west. The exterior presents a plain rectangular block with six full-height openings that are fitted with up-and-over roller doors, separated by brick piers. A square drip-course made of concrete, with a continuous upstand, runs across the full width of the building and around all sides. Above this, there is a 9-course brick parapet topped with plain flush concrete coping. In front of the piers between the garage doors, there are free-standing protective concrete blocks, approximately 1 meter wide, with rounded ends.

Inside, the sheds feature steel trusses and 9-inch fire walls that separate each bay.

Historically, Duxford is recognized as the finest and best-preserved example of a fighter base in Britain from the period up to 1945. It includes a uniquely complete group of First World War technical buildings, as well as technical and domestic structures typical of the inter-war Expansion Periods of the Royal Air Force. The site has significant associations with the Battle of Britain and the American fighter support for the Eighth Air Force. Petrol tanker sheds were built at RAF stations following a decision in 1934/5 to replace fixed refuelling points with a mobile refuelling system for aircraft. This block is prominently situated at the eastern end of the main technical buildings, facing the main thoroughfare that connects these buildings to the hangars.
