Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed parish church located on Bartlow Camps Road. It dates from the 12th, 14th, and 15th centuries and was restored in 1879. The building is constructed from flint, fieldstone, clunch, and limestone dressings. It features a round west tower with two stages and an embattled parapet that has been partly rebuilt, along with a chamfered plinth. The west window, dating from the 14th century, has two trefoil lights with a foiled head set in a two-centred arch. There is a single light window in the first stage with two chamfered orders in a two-centred arch. The nave, also from the 14th century, has restored fenestration, and the south doorway, which is now blocked, dates from the 14th to 15th centuries and is made of clunch with three continuous orders in a two-centred arch, featuring foiled spandrels and a square head with a label. The chancel, also from the 14th century, has restored reticulated tracery made of clunch. The north porch, dating from the 15th century, has been restored and features similar outer and inner arches with continuous moulded orders in a two-centred arch, foiled spandrels, and square heads with labels.
Inside, the tower arch from the 14th century consists of two continuous moulded orders, one of which is wave moulded, set in a two-centred arch. The 15th-century crown post roof has three bays with two-way upward bracing to the collar purlin and shallow arch bracing to the tie beams. The chancel arch features two continuous chamfered orders in a two-centred arch. A late 17th-century communion rail has symmetrically turned balusters. The nave contains 15th-century wall paintings, including depictions of St Michael weighing souls and St Christopher on the south side, and the dragoon of a lost St George on the north side. The font, from the 13th century, has an octagonal bowl on an octagonal stem and base.
