Description
The George Hotel is a 19th-century building located on High Street in Huntingdon, constructed in 1865 by R. Hutchinson. It features gault brick that is rendered and grooved on the ground floor, with red brick dressings above. The hotel stands three storeys tall and has eleven bays arranged in a 4:3:4 pattern, with the central three bays set slightly forward. There is a carriage arch at the ground floor and a pediment at the eaves. The ground floor has elliptical-headed windows, while the first floor has arched windows, and the upper floor features plain windows except for a Venetian window in the center. The building has modillion eaves and a slate roof with brick end stacks.
There is a similar wing facing George Street. The courtyard contains a timber-framed north wing that is two storeys high, with plastered walls and an old tile roof, showcasing 18th-century features such as a canted bay window and sash windows with glazing bars. The west wing dates back to the late 17th century and is made of red brick, painted on the courtyard side. It has two storeys and attics, with six windows, including one double sash. An archway is present in the third bay, and there is a raised band at the first-floor level. The old tile roof features six gabled dormers and brick stacks. Notably, the courtyard retains a very rare late 17th-century wooden gallery with shaped balusters. The star grading is specifically for the rear wing.
