Description

Little Paxton Hall is a mid-17th century house featuring two cross-wings to the north and south, with a five-bay insertion between the wings dating from around 1738. There are later 19th century additions to the south. The building is constructed of red brick and rendered brick with limestone dressings, topped with plain tile roofs; the east side of the cross-wings has parapet gables, while the west side is hipped. The side stacks have been rebuilt in red brick.

The house is two storeys high with attics, and the west-facing 18th century facade has nine bays, with the cross-wings slightly projecting. The plastered, panelled parapet features a moulded stone cornice with dentil enrichment. There are seven gabled dormer windows with alternating segmental and triangular pediments. The 19th century hung sash windows have glazing bars and are set in recessed, moulded stone architraves with stone sills at both floor levels. The central entrance has a replacement panelled door within a stone architrave, adorned with dentils and a broken triangular pediment supported by scroll brackets. A stone plinth is present, along with two rainwater heads dated 1738.

Inside, the hall retains some original 18th century moulded ceiling cornices and plastered panels, as well as an exposed timber-frame partition wall. There is a newel post leading to the original 17th century dog-leg stair, and the side purlin roofs date from the 17th century, with a later 18th century roof extension on the west facade.
