Description
The Leighton Bromswold War Memorial is a stone memorial unveiled in 1920, created by Pettit of Godmanchester. It features a cross with a chamfered shaft and decorative tracery at the angles of the arms. The tall rectangular plinth has a frieze decorated with a flower motif and chamfered corners, which include inset panels and additional tracery detailing. On the south side of the plinth, the names of nine soldiers who died in World War I are inscribed and painted black. Above these names is the inscription: "IN ABIDING MEMORY OF THE UNDERNAMED LEIGHTON LADS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." Below the names is the quote: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS." The memorial has recently undergone grant-aided conservation.
