Description
No 113 on Great Whyte is a 14th-century open hall with a solar. The original timber frame has been largely replaced by local brick and rendered, with significant alterations made in the 19th century. The building has a 19th-century slate roof that covers the original crown-post roof. It is one storey high with attics and features two dormers. The doorway and windows have been modernized.
Inside, you can see the mortices for the original shuttered window in the solar on the wall plate. Most of the rafters are intact and some show signs of being smoke blackened, although the crown post and collar purlin have been removed. The scarf joint in the wall plate of the east wall is edge halved and bridle butted with a wooden key. This cottage is similar to No 88 Great Whyte, Ramsey, which has recently been recorded and excavated, with publication of the findings forthcoming.
