Description
The County Hospital's main building, constructed in 1853 by T. Smith of Hertford, has undergone enlargements in 1863 and further extensions, particularly in 1897. It is built of gault brick with stucco dressings, featuring quoins and a band at the first floor level. The design reflects a Post Inigo Jones style. The building is two storeys high with a window arrangement of five-three-five; the central section is set forward. The windows are sashes with glazing bars and have keyed heads. The outer bays display alternate flat and pedimented heads, while the central windows have segmental heads. A prominent arched doorway is located in the centre, adorned with alternate plain and vermiculated voussoirs, leading to a glazed door. The central portion features an eaves pediment that contains a blind bullseye with a keyed surround and swags. The roofs are covered in slate. The side elevations consist of eight bays, some of which retain 17th century style mullion and transom casements. The west end of the building is largely obscured by a later wing.
