Description
The Parish Church of St. Michael is a Grade II* listed building located on High Street in Toseland. Originally a chapelry to Great Paxton, the church dates back to the mid-12th century, with only the chancel arch and south wall remaining from that period. The north wall of the nave was rebuilt in the 18th century. The chancel was reconstructed and the church underwent restoration in 1873 by architect A. Blomfield. A vestry was added in 1897. The church's walls are made of pebble-rubble and brick, featuring original dressings of Barnack stone and modern dressings of Bath stone, topped with tile roofs. The south elevation includes four round-headed windows, one of which is an original window adorned with bead ornamentation, along with two modern windows in the chancel. The mid-12th century south doorway features a semi-circular head with decorative ornamentation on each moulded order, supported by detached shafts with scalloped capitals, moulded abaci, and bases. Inside, the chancel arch has been restored using both original and modern stone, with attached shafts that have carved capitals.
