Description

Reed Cottage, a thatched cottage, is a house with a hall and crosswing plan, likely dating from the early 17th century, with a later 17th-century crosswing added to the north. It is constructed of red brick, primarily in English bond, featuring moulded brick at the upper edge of the thickened ground floor wall. The thatched roof has tumbled gable end parapets and a ridge stack located at the junction of the hall and crosswing. The building has two storeys, with a band on the front gable end of the crosswing that extends over the window opening as a drip mould.

On the first floor of the hall and south crosswing, there are three modern windows, one of which has cut bricks to the splayed reveals, and a small three-light casement that is now blocked, featuring ovolo mullions. The ground floor has three modern windows and a doorway leading to a lobby entry, with a 19th-century boarded door. The main beams of the hall are moulded but lack stops and may be reused, while the 17th-century joists are laid on edge. The south crosswing retains original joists of large scantling, laid flat.

Inside the hall, there is an inglenook with herring-bone patterned brickwork and pointed arches leading to a bread oven and spice and salt cupboards. The north crosswing is also built of red brick, with a thatched roof, tumbled gable end parapets, and an end stack. There is a band between the two storeys and at the eaves height, along with five windows and two doorways, all dating from the 20th century.
