Description
Dorlyn Cottage is a farmhouse dating from the late 15th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and plaster, although some walls have been replaced with brick. The cottage features red pantile roofs with 19th-century shaped barge boards. It is one storey high with attics and has a hall and cross-wing plan, with the service end on the left, which may have been added in the 17th century. There are ridge stacks made of local red brick, likely from the late 17th or 18th century, with a moulded brick string course.
The hall range includes two casement dormer windows, three modern ground floor windows, and a glazed door, while the cross-wing gable has three casement windows. Inside, some wall posts and tie beams are exposed, and the floor frame in the hall is notable for its deeply moulded cyma and roll mouldings with leaf-stops. The inglenook hearth retains its original jambs made of clunch and a chamfered mantel beam. The roof structure is a side purlin design.
