Description
This large 16th-century barn and warehouse is associated with Isleham Hall and was formerly linked to the port of Isleham by a now-filled small lode or cut. There is a late 16th-century or early 17th-century granary addition on the right side and 20th-century repairs to the left gable end. The building is constructed of coursed clunch with red brick dressings around the window openings. It features a steeply pitched plain tiled roof with parapetted gable ends. The structure has nine bays and was originally two storeys high. Openings at the first and ground floors have splayed surrounds and four-centred red brick arches, with some windows having sites for iron grilles. The large barn door entries are enlargements of the original openings. Inside, the roof remains intact, featuring side purlin construction with curved wind bracing from the principal rafters to the purlins. The tie beams are cambered and stop-chamfered, supported by wall posts with arch bracing connecting the posts to the ties.
