Description
The Kirtling and Upend War Memorial is a First World War memorial that also includes names added after the Second World War. It is made of rough hewn granite and is situated on the green at the junction of Cowlinge Road and Newmarket Road.
The memorial features a Celtic cross that rests on a square plinth and a three-stepped base. It is enclosed within a small square gravelled area, which is defined by a low stone kerb. The plinth bears the inscription: ‘Lest we forget/ To the glory of God/ And in grateful memory/ of the men of Kirtling/ who gave their lives in the Great War/ 1914-1918’, along with fourteen names inscribed in the step below, which are incised and painted. Additionally, there is a small metal plaque beneath the inscription on the plinth that lists the dates 1939-1945 and the names of three men who fell in the Second World War.
