Description
Stetchworth House is a small country house built around 1786 by Richard Eaton, with alterations made in 1870. The building features stuccoed brick and slated roofs, standing three storeys tall with basements and a symmetrical double pile plan. The parapet is shaped around the side stacks and has a pediment on the northeast elevation. It has a deep moulded cornice, a band at the first floor, and a plinth. The house has five 'bays', with the central three slightly projecting. The second and first floors have five recessed twelve-paned hung sash windows, while the ground floor has four eighteen-paned hung sash windows. The original doorway and a first-floor window are set in a shallow round-arched recess, which is partly obscured by a large late 19th-century closed porch featuring corner pilasters and an entablature topped with urns. The entrance has three panelled double doors and half-glazed doors. There are low wings with a balustraded parapet on both sides, which were rebuilt from the original service wing and conservatory. The interior, not seen in 1983, includes a geometric planned open string staircase, six panelled doors with moulded architraves, and over doors with enriched friezes and cornices. The ground floor rooms have 18th-century panelling, while the drawing room features a white panelled chimney piece and the dining room has an Ionic grey marble chimney piece. The stable block and alterations to the house are attributed to Sir Roger Palmer.
