Description
Marshall House, formerly known as Balliol Croft, is a house built around 1885 by J. J. Stevenson for Alfred Marshall. It has been converted into student study bedrooms in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick laid in English bond and features plain tile roofs. It stands two storeys high with a dormer attic, rising to three storeys at the east end, and has a three-window range.
The right-hand side has a three-storey tower, which is lit by a 6/6 horned sash window on the ground and first floors, both under segmental heads. The second floor has two 2/4 horned sashes beneath gauged skewback arches. At the center of the elevation is a raised first-floor balcony supported by turned timber corner posts and a balustrade, accessed through a glazed French door. The ground floor features a 6/6 segmental-headed horned sash window to the left and a recessed pair of double doors to the right. The balcony roof is sheltered by a pentice roof. The left bay has one 6/6 horned sash under a segmental head on the first floor only. The gabled roof includes a flat-roofed dormer fitted with one 2-light and one 3-light casement window with glazing bars. The west return has a ground-floor canted bay window.
Inside, the ground-floor south-west room contains an eared chimneypiece with a pulvinated frieze and a panelled sliding door leading to the south-east room. The kitchen retains original cupboards and shelving. The staircase balustrade has been boarded over in the late 20th century, featuring square newel posts.
