Description
Building 13 of the Bata Factory is a factory constructed in 1933, designed by the Czechoslovakian architect Frantizek L. Gahura. It features a reinforced concrete frame with painted brick spandrels and metal framed windows, topped by a flat roof with a shallow projecting cornice. The building has a rectangular plan consisting of three bays by thirteen bays, with thin, full-height pilaster strips that define each bay. The left side has a central section of three bays that project forward, creating a circulation spine, with the centremost bay projecting even further and being fully glazed. There are utility sheds located on the roof above. An external fire stair, designed authentically, is located on the right side of the building. This factory is recognized as an exceptionally early and complete example of the International Style of architecture in Britain.
