Description

Hollow Cottages, also known as Purfleet Hollow Cottages, is a terrace of twelve cottages built around 1790. The original terrace was reduced to six cottages in the mid-19th century when some units were combined. Constructed of grey stock brick with a red plain tile roof, the cottages are single-storied and retain a twelve-window range, featuring 19th-century oriel bays with glazing bars and 20th-century metal casement windows. Grey brick chimney stacks are present. The terrace was extended in the mid-19th century with two similar units, which incorporate a lower-pitch roof clad in modern plain tiles and have a four-window range with oriel bays. A 20th-century gabled two-story extension is located at the west end.
