Description
Sibberton Lodge is a 17th-century house that includes a medieval wing, which may have served as a chapel. The 17th-century section features a datestone from 1657 and is constructed of coursed stone with a steeply pitched Collyweston stone roof and coped gable ends. It is two stories tall and has a four-window range. The first floor has modern casements, while the ground floor showcases three and four-light ovolo moulded stone mullion casements with cornices, along with a doorway that has a simple moulded architrave. To the right, there is a two-storey gabled staircase wing, with ashlar end and ridge stacks. At the north end, there is a 13th-century stone wing with a hipped roof, buttresses on the north side, and a cusped two-light blocked window in the west gable end. Inside, the building features a two by two bay vaulted undercroft with round chamfered arches and a corbelled stone fireplace in the side wall. The interior of the 17th-century section includes a cambered and moulded fireplace bressumer and an ovolo moulded chamfer on the ceiling beam. According to Bridges' "History of Northants" from 1791, it is traditionally said that there was a chapel here, although no evidence of this has been found in ancient writings. The deserted medieval village of Sibberton is located immediately to the north.
