Description

Moat House is a late 14th century manor house located on Moat Lane in Biscot, originally built within a moat. It was reroofed and altered around 1500 and underwent extensive modernization between 1968 and 1969. The building is constructed of stone and is rendered, except for the east gable end, which features a mix of clunch, brick, and flint. The roof is thatched, although it was tiled prior to modernization.

The house has a rectangular plan with a modern outbuilding at the rear. The front elevation faces south and includes five casement windows on the first floor. On the ground floor, from left to right, there is a sash window, a modern gabled porch with a front door, a 19th-century thatched bay window with sashes, and another modern door. The east side elevation has brick in the gable apex, with a full-length single buttress at each corner. There is one square-headed deeply recessed window on the left, and another similar window that has been blocked.

Inside, the building is arranged over two storeys, featuring substantial floor framing and a centrally placed modern chimney. The roof structure consists of eight bays divided by four large trusses dating from around 1500. There is a small gap between the four bays to the west and the four to the east. All eight bays have arches to the collars and windbraces, two purlins, and a moulded wall plate. The western half of the roof has moulded purlins and battlemented ties above the arched collars, while the eastern half has a similar structure but is undecorated. The building has been extensively renovated, and a plaque on the ground floor, formerly in the cellar, records the size of hailstones from 1666.
