Description

The Church of St George is a Grade I listed cruciform church featuring a crossing tower, constructed from Totternhoe stone. The building is battlemented and has a frieze of animals below the battlements. The crossing arches of the tower and the south doorway date back to the 13th century, while the nave arcades, which consist of four bays with high octagonal piers, are from the early 14th century. The remainder of the church is from the 15th century.

The church includes a three-storey vestry with priest's accommodation on the first floor. Notable features include fine 15th-century roofs in the chancel and nave, adorned with angels carrying emblems of the Crucifixion, and moulded bosses at the purlin and ridge intersections. There are fragments of painting in the south aisle depicting figures, medallions, and tools.

In the south transept, there are several monuments to the Cheyne family, including Thomas Peyro (deceased 1429) and his wife, as well as three chest tombs for Dame Anne Cheyne (deceased 1561), Lord Cheyne (deceased 1587), and Lady Cheyne (deceased 161), with the latter two made of alabaster. The north transept, known as Wentworth Chapel, contains monuments including one for Maria Wentworth (deceased 1632), featuring a seated figure under a baldacchino, and another for Lady Henrietta Wentworth (deceased 1686), which includes two allegorical figures and a grotesque representation of Death.
