Description
The Isolation Hospital at Fairfield Hospital is a disused building constructed in 1878 by George Fowler Jones, with mid-20th century additions. It is designed in an Italianate style, featuring yellow brick with ashlar and red brick dressings, and slate roofs. The hospital has a large, coped side wall and ridge stacks.
The central administration block is two storeys high, flanked by single-storey service blocks at the rear and angled ward wings on each side, creating a half-butterfly plan. The central block has two windows on each floor and a hipped roof with dentillated eaves. Each side features a short single-storey corridor, with one window on the left and two on the right.
The ward wings are T-shaped and include hipped projections next to the corridors, each with single windows. On the inner sides of the wards, there are mid-20th century lean-to sun rooms. The outer ends of the wings have gables with open verandahs, which are three bays wide and supported by cast iron columns with waterleaf capitals. These verandahs feature segmental polychrome arches and above them are three pairs of small round-arched windows, topped by a round louvred opening with four keystones. Under the verandah, there are fitted benches, a doorway, and two windows. The sanitary blocks at the ends have a small window on each side. The service block has a hipped roof and three windows.
