Description

Mill Farmhouse and the adjoining water grist mill are located in Toddington and date from around the 17th century, with remodeling and extensions made in the early to mid-19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of painted brick and may include some timber framing, topped with slate roofs featuring gabled ends, while the rear wing has a hipped roof. The building has brick gable-end and lateral stacks. It follows a two-room plan, with the right room heated by a rear lateral stack and the left room featuring a gable and stack. The water mill, positioned as a cross-wing at the right end of the farmhouse, has an overshot wheel at the back.

During the early to mid-19th century, both the farmhouse and mill were remodeled, and a rear wing was added to the house. The two-storey farmhouse has a two-window front, with 12-pane sash windows on the first floor and 16-pane sash windows on the ground floor, along with a six-panel door that has a glazed top panel. The rear wing features a casement window with glazing bars. The three-storey mill forms a gable-ended cross-wing to the right, with a ground floor doorway on the left side, a first-floor doorway in the gable end at a higher ground level, and a loft doorway above. At the back of the mill, there is a deep wheel pit for a missing overshot wheel.

Inside the farmhouse, the right room contains a large lateral fireplace with a timber lintel, which is covered by an arris-moulded chimneypiece with pilasters and a shelf. The axial ceiling beam is chamfered and lacks stops. The 19th-century joinery includes panelled doors. The left room has a small 19th-century chimneypiece and a boxed-in axial beam. The mill features large floor beams and a stone floor with chamfers. The meal floor has a hurst frame with a stone nut, and the stone floor contains two stones, although the loft has been removed. The mill is supported by a king-post roof structure with struts that hold clasped side purlins. It is noted that there has been a water mill on this site since 1581.
