Description
The Town Hall, located at Saint Paul's Square, is a Grade II listed building that was originally a Tudor structure. It was refaced in 1767 by Isaac Clayson, with further modifications made in 1861. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a cornice and parapet. It has a slight central projection topped with a pediment. The Town Hall is two storeys high and has a window arrangement of 1: 2: 1, all set within architraves. The central entrance door is also framed by an architrave and topped with a pediment. Above the door, there is a semi-circular round arched niche that houses a statue of Sir William Harpur, created by Benjamin Palmer in 1767. Sir William Harpur was a benefactor of the Grammar School that previously occupied the building.
