Description
Hinwick Hall is a 16th-century small country house that was remodeled in the early 18th century and further extended and altered in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features red tile and Collyweston slate roofs. It has two storeys and attics, arranged in an L-plan, with a large late 19th-century wing added to the northwest end. Due to subsequent alterations, much of the identifiable 16th-century work has been lost, although some windows on the south and west elevations date from this period. These include 2 and 5-light leaded casements with stone mullions and dripmoulds, as well as an early large chimney stack on the south elevation.
The east elevation was completely rebuilt in the early 18th century to serve as the main entrance front. It features a bracketed eaves cornice and four sash windows with glazing bars in moulded flush surrounds on each floor. The central projecting porch is two storeys high with an attic, flanked by Corinthian pilasters on the ground floor, which support an entablature around a doorway with an eared bolection surround. This doorway is accented by consoles and a pulvinated frieze, topped with a broken scroll pediment that has a central half vase in the tympanum. The first and second floors have Composite angle pilasters with entablatures, and a modillion wooden cornice above. At the top, there is a square weatherboarded turret surmounted by an octagonal arcaded wooden cupola with a ball finial and wrought iron weathervane. Full height Corinthian pilasters frame the corners of the east front. The 20th-century alterations were carried out in 1908 by Mr. G Robinson, during which the interior was entirely remodeled and the northwest wing was added to complement the 16th-century work.
