Description
South Lodge at Wood Norton Hall is a late 19th-century lodge, built in 1898 by G.H. Hunt for the Duc d'Orleans. The lodge is constructed of red brick with freestone dressings and timber framing with plaster panels, and has plain machine tile roofs with gabled ends ornamented with moulded bargeboards. Brick gable-end stacks feature brick shafts and corbelling. The plan is L-shaped, incorporating a porch in the angle and a single-storey service wing to the rear. Designed in the Old English style, it is built as a single storey with an attic. The asymmetrical elevations have jettied timber-framed gables. The porch, situated in the angle of the building, originally had timber balusters and a narrow frieze of balusters on the front, but has since been glazed. Brackets support the gable jetties, which in turn support bay windows with stone mullion-transom windows. The timber-framed gables above feature fleur-de-lis plaster panels and an oriel, along with moulded bressumers. Casement windows have glazing bars. A gabled stack is located on the south east side, featuring a stone panel displaying arms and the date 1898. The single-storey service wing at the rear, to the north east, has small stone mullion windows. The interior has not been inspected.
