Description
The gate piers, gates, and quadrant wall located about 50 yards east of Overbury Court were designed in 1887 by Richard Norman Shaw for Robert Martin. Constructed from limestone ashlar and wrought iron, the tall square piers feature moulded cornices and raised, moulded rectangular panels on both the front and rear, topped with ball finials on flattened pyramidal bases. The piers are connected by an elaborate wrought iron archway, which displays the initial "M" and the date "1887" in gilded lettering. The large gates are similarly ornate, featuring scrolled and foliated designs. Each pier has a small single iron gateway on its outer side, each with a segmental stone head and a smaller, more simply detailed outer pier topped with a ball finial. The quadrant walls, which are about five feet high, have a moulded coping. The north wall curves east for about five yards before ending at another similar small pier, while the south wall also stands about five feet high, curves east for about five yards, and then extends due south for an additional five yards.
