Description
The garden wall adjoining Gardens House to the north-east is a structure from the 18th or 19th century, remodeled around 1908 by Ernest Newton for Richard Biddulph Martin, with further alterations made in the mid-20th century by Victor Heal. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble topped with ashlar coping, standing about ten feet high. The wall runs due east for approximately 60 yards, then turns south for about four yards before returning east for about three yards, where it meets Baron Villa.
About four yards from Gardens House, there is a square-headed gateway featuring a gate with three long lower cusped panels and an open balustraded upper panel, although two of the turned balusters have been replaced with stick balusters. The south return of the wall includes a public telephone box added in the mid-20th century, which has a doorway with a moulded stone ashlar architrave and a half-glazed door. This wall is a prominent feature in the village, located opposite the churchyard of the Church of St Faith.
