Description

11 and 12 New Street is a house and former Methodist Chapel, now two houses, dating from the mid-18th century with later additions and alterations, including an early 19th-century shop front and restorations from around the 1980s. The building is constructed of reddish brick in Flemish bond, featuring ashlar bands and a plain tile roof, with a stack at the left end that has an oversailing course and pots. It stands three storeys high with three first-floor windows. There is a continuous sill band on the first floor and a band on the second floor. The first and second floors have 8/8 near-flush cambered-arched sashes under flat-headed cambered arches, with dummy sashes in the centre. On the ground floor, there is a multi-pane bow window to the left, flanked by reeded pilasters and a frieze, along with two 6-panel doors with overlights in reeded surrounds. To the right, there is a renewed 8/8 sash with a cambered arch. The interior has not been inspected. A plaque on the front notes that John Wesley opened the first Methodist Chapel in Worcester in this building in 1772. New Street was renamed from the medieval Glover Street by 1523. Historical records indicate that in the 16th and 17th centuries, New Street was a location of dwelling-houses with workshops behind them.
